2007 Wellness Program
|
|
SHAQ’S BIG CHALLENGE television show was filmed at Olsen Middle School in an effort to provide a wake-up call on the topic of childhood obesity. In response to this call, our teachers designed the Shaquille O' Neal Wellness Wheel curriculum to meet the needs of hundreds of middle school students. The overall program content was based on the Surgeon General's priority of addressing increasing physical acitivity and knowledge of nutrition.
Through the specialized curriculum, students are physically active 2-3 times a week, while learning about the foods and essential nutrients their bodies need, and receiving hands on experience and instruction in cooking healthy meals. This is accomplished through the creation of a flexible schedule in which students learn about wellness by rotating through physical education, teen health and healthy cooking. This combination of courses provides students with the tools necessary to take control of their personal wellness.
Shaquille O’Neal Wellness Wheel Highlights
Approximately 60 students were randomly selected to participate in the pilot wellness program. Scores in 5 fitness tests, along with BMI and GPA’s were measured before the start of the program.
The students began below the national average in the 5 baseline fitness scores completed in congruence with the Presidents Challenge. The BMI scores averaged 23.1 for both boys and girls ages 13-14. That average put the class in the 85th percentile which the CDC considers to be “at risk” for being overweight. The class GPA was 2.3.
